No, heh, ehkei kovin todennäköinen riski tai tilanne.)
Ilmat olivat hirveät. Melkein koko ajan satoi.
Itse otin matkalla nolla valokuvaa.

Lee Mead to star in Wicked from May 2010!
I am really, truly, fangirlishly excited about this bit of news: Whatsonstage: Wicked Returns Lee Mead to Musicals
Mr. Mead is probably the only musical theatre actor whose VOICE doesn't need to give me chills. :P
(Wait, let's think. John Barrowman's voice probably wouldn't have to - especially when he was younger - but it does, so nevermind. Cheyenne Jackson's voice wouldn't have to... OK, it kind of doesn't, but his suberb acting does. Yeah, Lee Mead is the only person I can think of who has fully captivated me on stage with pretty much just his physical appearance. A dubious honour, but there you go. :D)
I'll be queuing for Wicked day tickets the next couple of times I'm in London. Despite what I just said, I honestly think young Mr. Mead will make a first-rate Fiyero. (And his singing is fine. Just no chills.)
For those who don't know, Fiyero is the love interest, a fairytale prince charming type character - handsome and shallow in the beginning, less shallow towards the end. (Think Hairspray's Link, only the girl is green, not fat.)
Pictured: the Fiyero I first saw, Oliver Tompsett. (And the only one, actually - only seen Wicked the once.) Not a bad looking guy, that one, either. ;)

Uutisia AV-käännösalan nykytilanteesta
Ainakin Google Analyticsin mukaan blogiani lukee typerryttävän suuri määrä ihmisiä, joita AV-käännösala kiinnostaa. Tässäpä teille muutama linkki tuoreisiin uutisiin alan nykytilanteesta - jos kerta blogini kiinnostaa, innostutte varmaan myös näistä!
Journalistiliitto: Kansainväliset tekstitysfirmat uhkaavat kielitaitoa (YLEn uutinen)
Kääntäjien kansanliike (Artikkeli Ylioppilaslehdessä)
Lopuksi linkki foorumille, jolle jokaisen AV-alalla työskentelevän ja kieliä opiskelevan - mahdollisesti jopa muutenkin alalle mielivän - kannattaa pyytää kutsua.

LEFFA: Nine (2009) - 4,5 stars out of 5
Olen palannut Suomeen. Katsoin matkan aikana kahden livemusikaalin lisäksi myös otsikossa mainitun musikaalileffan.
I think I'm a bit strange. Chicago won an Oscar, I hated it. Nine gets massacred by critics, I go in expecting to hate it (same director), end up loving it.
My biggest complaint about Chicago was that the musical numbers were completely removed from the film's reality. This film kind of has the same thing, but I have NO problem with it whatsoever, because the main character remains the same in both realities - he is watching the musical numbers in his mind and reacting to them.
I listen to Italian at least 10 hours a week these days (while subtitling), and I must say the film's Italian and mock-Italian are _perfectly_ done. Day Lewis's accent is just as pitch-perfect as his acting. This attention to detail is a small thing but really won me over.
The staging of the musical numbers is flawless and breathtaking. (Yes, women are objectified, but that is so the point!) Penelope Cruz is amazing and strikingly beautiful. While Kate Hudson's acting or looks don't exactly rock my world, wait for the musical number - who knew she can sing and dance like that?! Possibly the best in the film.
Here's a music video of the song. It's intercut with other clips from the film and contains no spoilers as far as I can tell. The actual scene has a lot more great dancing, but it also spoils the film slightly, and I couldn't find it on Youtube anyway. (Pronouncing "cinema" the EN way - not ITA, with "ch" as in "chimney" - is not a mistake, Hudson's character is American.)
Marion Cotillard fails miserably at whatever accent she's going for (seems to vary from scene to scene), although she's very good otherwise. They might as well have cut Fergie and the Mother character.
There is very little plot momentum, but we're watching a film about the disintegration of a man's world. How much is there supposed to be?
I've never seen the stage version of Nine. I hear the movie is very, very different, and inferior in most people's opinion. My view may be somewhat altered if I ever manage to catch the real thing, but I can't imagine turning around and starting to _hate_ this, because the film very clearly works for me as is.

Taas se tekstittäjä tuolla jotain saarnaa..?
Vähän tuo matka painaa päälle. Pitäisi tehdä melkoiset vuoret töitä ennen sitä, ja Marjukkakin on taas tulossa alkuviikoksi, mikä (onneksi?) rajoittaa järjettömintä yötä myöten naputtelua. Älkää toisaalta käsittäkö väärin, on kiva lähteä Britanniaan taas, odotan sydämentykytyksiä aiheuttavalla innolla varsinkin tiedätte-kyllä-mitä.
Elämä on täyttynyt töiden lisäksi ammattiyhdistysjutuista.

Here's a preview of what I'm seeing next Thursday! (In less than a week! "Squee" is the appropriate reaction.)

Eponine still has her trusty hat. They seem to have hung onto the staples. Less dirt on the face, at least in this picture. I liked the dirt!

IMO the Thernadiers' ball outfits kind of didn't need changing. The West End versions are brilliant. These are in the same vein but slightly less over-the-top. Maybe I'll like them more live.

What hasn't changed much? The barricade, judging by this. I've heard it HAS changed and e.g. no longer revolves, but the visual idea appears very similar here.

Javert now has a much trendier overcoat and an actual bridge to stand on. And STARS! Love!!!

Gareth Gates as Marius. I've actually heard he's very good in the role. A little old, maybe, but nevermind.

In this version, Valjean escapes from the circus, not a work camp.
Only joking. I do wonder if the colours are really this bright. Maybe I'm just too used to the old grey rags.

Later on Valjean looks much more like his West End incarnation. Which makes sense: how many ways of designing 19th century French army uniforms are there?
Enjolras has his trusty vest. Which apparently is the reason John Robyns (who used to play Marius in the West End) really wanted this part. He'd envied that vest for years.

They gave Enjolras a blonde wig. I wonder why. To make him look angelic? To make Robyns look less like a Marius? To make him look more like the current West End god that is David Thaxton?
He does look very dashing. Very Enjolras. I am a bit worried about the tone of his voice... between him and Gates, will it be a little too much like two Mariuses singing?

We have a prettier gate with shrubs and stuff, and Cosette isn't always dressed in black. Cool.

I like Fantine's new dress. And I like that she's beautiful. She needs to be angelic.
They almost always go a bit old on the casting, though. If Fantine is someone who erred in her youth (under 20, sounds like, in her song) and has a child of around 10 years old, wouldn't that actually still make her under thirty?

Tänään on selvä TV-päivä.
Sellaisia ihmisiä on nähty kisassa yllättävän vähän.
Mistä tulikin mieleeni netistä luettu ilouutinen: Survivorin uusin kausi USA:ssa on "Heroes vs. Villains". Ja roistojen puolelle palaa Robin ja Amberin Rob, tuo ihanista ihanin kieroilija. Jippii!
No, myöhemmin.

No, ei hätää. Seuraavalla viikolla onkin jo seuraava ulkomaanmatka, hehee. Lähden 20.1. vajaaksi viikoksi Britanniaan, käyttämään vanhempia ja tätiä Eini-siskon luona Durhamissa. (Eini on opetusharjoittelussa ala-asteella, valmistumassa Suomessa hissanopeksi.
Aika loppui. Eli juu, sitten moikataan siskoa pari päivää Durhamissa, käydään varmaan porukalla Newcastlessa, tullaan ilman siskoa takaisin Lontooseen, jossa vielä yksi yö ja aikaa tehdä ja ihmetellä, muttei voi enää mennä teatteriin, koska on sunnuntai eikä sunnuntaisin paljon mitään tarjolla. Takaisin ma 25.1.
Saa nähdä, miten hermoni kestävät matkanjohtajana olemista. Olen yrittänyt asennoitua siihen, joten toivottavasti hyvin. Vaikka sukulaisporukalle varmasti pitääkin tilata kaikki ravintoloissa eikä heitä oikeasti voi jättää yksin harhailemaan mihinkään, vaikka miten haluaisi vähän aikaa kulkea rauhassa. No, on meitä onneksi kaksi opasta puolet ajasta.

Takaisin ma 25.1.
Saa nähdä, miten hermoni kestävät matkanjohtajana olemista. Olen yrittänyt asennoitua siihen, joten toivottavasti hyvin. Vaikka sukulaisporukalle varmasti pitääkin tilata kaikki ravintoloissa eikä heitä oikeasti voi jättää yksin harhailemaan mihinkään, vaikka miten haluaisi vähän aikaa kulkea rauhassa. No, on meitä onneksi kaksi opasta puolet ajasta.

Ne 2000-luvun parhaat musikaalielokuvat
Tästä tuli paremminkin kategorioihin jaettu "mitä ajattelin 2000-luvun musikaalielokuvista"-teemakirjoitus, mutta minkäs teet?
Englanniksi, koska ajattelen sitä englanninkielistä musikaaliblogia lähiaikoina aloittelevani.
Juttu on jaettu neljään kategoriaan: A - teatterimusikaaleihin pohjautuvat, B - ei-teatterimusikaaleihin pohjautuvat, C - jukeboksit, D - musiikkielokuvat . Lopussa bonuskategoriat X ja Y. Kategoriapakkomielle nostaa päätään. Ajattelutapansa kullakin. :)

(A) Stage adaptations (in order of faithfulness):
The Phantom of the Opera
The Producers
Chicago
Hairspray
Rent
Dreamgirls
Sweeney Todd
Let's leave out Sweeney Todd for the time being. The other stage-based movie musicals of the 2000's seem to want to replicate watching the thing at the theatre - and to do very little else. It's as if the directors had no original vision. (Unless we're counting the desire to recreate the original for the screen. Which, I suppose, is a vision of sorts. See, now I've just confused myself.)
Most of the films on the list are not cinematic masterpieces, but all of them offer a reasonable substitute for watching the stage musical. The ones I enjoyed the most? Hands down, Rent and Hairspray. (Would also recommend Sweeney, but will get to that at the end of section A.)
I've always thought Rent was completely underrated. Chris Columbus made the unfortunate mistake of staying faithful enough to the stage musical to alienate most laymen, while straying far enough to piss off the fans. I personally embrace Columbus's valiant efforts to recreate Rent as closely as possible while making it work on the screen, but find myself in a tiny minority. Which makes me sad. (I do recommend watching both Rent and Rent Filmed Live on Broadway, to hear the considerable amount of great music that was cut from the film.)
However, everyone should at least love the fact that the cast consists mostly of the original Broadway actors. Seriously! This film is worth watching solely to hear them sing. They are on a Whole. Another. Level. If there was any justice in the world, this would have been a lesson to the directors who go for celebrity stunt casting.
I have a soft spot for Hairspray, too - the delightful Nikki Blonsky in the lead actually sort of disproves my theory about using stage actors wherever possible. (But note: she is not celebrity stunt casting, she was the best newcomer they could find.) Hairspray fully retains the positive energy of the stage version, and the combinaton of coreography and cinematography is quite simply the best thing ever. I'm not crazy about the preachy tone in the second half, or the couple of serious plot changes, but this is still an exemplary stage-to-screen adaptation.
Dreamgirls and The Producers fall in the middle for me. Enjoyable, not my favourite films or stage musicals, not my least favourite. Worth watching for sure.
I do not much care for Phantom or Chicago on stage, which goes hand in hand with how I feel about their screen counterparts. Phantom is wonderfylly lavish, but soulless and exceptionally void of any vision of its own, even compared to the others on the list. (Also, Christine and Phantom should sing better. This is not an easy, poppy musical.) Chicago is probably as good an adaptation as you can get out of Chicago the stage musical, but I happen to dislike the stage musical quite a lot. (Although "Cell Block Tango" almost justifies the existence of both.) So yeah, no. I did not want to run out of the cinema while watching either film, but thus far they have not been added to my collection of musical DVDs.
So, what about Sweeney Todd? It almost deserves a category of its own, because Tim Burton quite clearly had that much-talked-about vision. I sorely miss some of the material that was cut - and Burton cut a lot - but the choices make perfect sense to me: he was turning a pitch-black comedy into a Shakespearean revenge tragedy. The end result is different from the stage musical, but gory, consistent and stylish, albeit heavy enough to discourage repeat viewing (for me, anyway - hence not as big a favourite as Rent or Hairspray).
I am excluding the train wreck that was Mamma Mia! from this list. It's not a real musical anyway.

(B) Original (= not based-on-stage) movie musicals:
I can only think of three! A bizarre list... Please tell me I'm forgetting something! (See section C first.)
Enchanted
Corpse Bride
High School Musical 3
Enchanted was adorable, but needed more songs. As is, it was at an annoying level of half-musical. I did enjoy it on other levels.
Corpse Bride was a letdown... not bad by any means, but bland, including the music. I found the songs unimportant, unremarkable and unmemorable, although do remember thinking Helena Bonham Carter had a sweet singing voice. (I should perhaps watch this again with more moderate expectations.)
Feel free to lynch me, but I thoroughly enjoyed High School Musical 3. I thought it was the absolute best it could be within the tight Disney / tween niche constraints. Great coreography; charming nods to stage musicals; inventive... help, what's the equivalent of "staging" in films... or is it still staging... let's say staging for now. (Does it help that Zac Efron is cute? Ye... I mean, we're not talking about that right now.)

(C) Jukebox musicals:
Moulin Rouge
Across the Universe
I generally dislike jukebox musicals, but if I had to pick one favourite out of everything I'm mentioning for the decade, it might have to be Moulin Rouge. Its manic energy, truly original vision and visual splendour are beyond compare. The jukebox songs and lyrics actually fit the plot, and the Elephant Love Medley is pure genius. The leads can sing. I dislike the unnecessary melodrama at the very end, but I can always stop watching when the curtain goes down (which feels so right anyway), before the annoying sob story part.
Across the Universe is a far more flawed film, but I definitely enjoyed it - especially the first half, before the thing spirals into incoherent acid-mushroom-hippy-trippy madness, from which the momentum never fully recovers. The singing is very good, the staging of music numbers lovely, lyrics generally fit the plot. A worthy attempt.

(D) Good films with music (but not musicals):
Walk the Line
8 Mile
Once
Walk the Line has a touching story, great acting and intense musical performances. I gave it four stars once upon a time.
8 Mile mostly just has one great Oscar-winning song, but I remember enjoying the film at the cinema and even finding Eminem's acting perfectly adequate.
Once is an intimate low-key story about two regular people who are able to make soaring music together. Very worthy.

(X) The films I know should have seen before making this list:
(There are more, right? Tell me!)
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Fame
Nine
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
---
(Y) Three movie musicals I hated in the 2000's:
Romance & Cigarettes (just a bad, bad film)
Mamma Mia (try hiring a coreographer next time... not being a lame jukebox musical might help even more)
Dancer in the Dark (hated the story and thought Björk's songs, while cool on their own, did not suit the character who was into classic musicals)
